Back End Development Team Lead

This position is open at BILLZ — a fast-growing startup that helps more than 4,000 retail stores across CIS countries automate processes, make data-driven decisions, and scale their businesses. Our clients include brands like Benetton, Mango, Levi's, Calvin Klein, L'Occitane, Yves Rocher, and many others.

Our product is recognized as one of the best solutions in the fashion retail segment and continues to grow rapidly. We are planning expansion into 5 countries: Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Georgia. That's why we're strengthening our team and looking for an experienced Lead of Back End Development team, who will build a reliable and scalable infrastructure for the entire region.

You will be a technical leader and manage the operational efficiency of the backend development team: from designing server-side architecture to implementing new technologies and improving system performance.

Your area of responsibility includes product backend quality, team efficiency, and improving development processes and metrics.

• Lead the backend development team (planning, oversight, development);
• Develop and implement strategies for building high-quality server-side solutions;
• Design and optimize backend architecture, define technical standards, and ensure compliance;
• Set up and improve internal team processes, implement best engineering practices (code reviews, TDD, mob/pair programming, test automation);
• Train, onboard, develop, and motivate the team; build a talent pipeline; conduct performance reviews;
• Organize regular meetings (planning, retrospectives, 1:1s); generate ideas to improve processes and backend quality;
• Introduce automation tools and scalable processes, manage technical debt;
• Collaborate with product, frontend, mobile, and other technical teams; manage stakeholder expectations;
• Create and maintain technical documentation: policies, instructions, standards;
• Build a culture of technical excellence, innovation, and knowledge sharing;
• Analyze team and system performance, identify and resolve bottlenecks;
• Participate in planning and implementing major technical initiatives affecting backend architecture;
• Mentor, support, and promote the professional growth of engineers;
• Participate in hiring, onboarding, and developing new team members;
• Ensure data, product, and infrastructure security.

• Has 3+ years of experience as a team lead;
• Has managed teams of 5+ people, delegates effectively, and develops team maturity;
• Has expertise in backend development and server-side architecture;
• Knows best practices in server-side application development and can implement them;
• Experienced with databases (SQL/NoSQL), caching systems, and message queues;
• Skilled in driving change, managing team growth, and building a talent pipeline;
• Independent, proactive, result-oriented, and able to work in uncertainty;
• Capable of inspiring, teaching, and developing people, conducting performance reviews, and creating development plans;
• Understands microservices architecture, API design, and integration solutions;
• Proficient with monitoring, logging, and profiling tools; can identify and fix performance bottlenecks;
• Keeps up with backend development trends and implements best practices and new technologies;
• Able to facilitate technical discussions, make decisions, and argue their position effectively;
• Experienced in setting up and optimizing CI/CD processes, testing, and deploying backend applications;
• Familiar with cloud technologies (AWS, GCP, Azure) and containerization;
• Understands server system security principles and data protection.
